Rants and Raves of a Bum

Breathe new life into old or broken Christmas ornaments with these nifty tricks.

MANILA, NOVEMBER 13, 2015 : Christmas is just around the corner, and without a doubt, if you’re part of a typical Filipino family, you’ve probably already started decorating your home to get into the holiday spirit. If you don’t have the budget for new ornaments and you’re stuck with old or damaged ones, don’t despair; you can still use them to deck your halls with a bit of creativity. Follow these tips from MyProperty.ph on crafting fresh, new pieces out of these worn but much-loved traditional Yuletide knick-knacks.

Adorn a frame. Got Christmas tree ornaments like figurines and balls with missing hooks and strings? Don’t toss them out; all you need is an old picture frame and a hot glue gun to use them again. Simply stick these ornaments onto the frame and put a picture of your family or any holiday-related image or quote in the frame for a unique wall hanging. If you can’t spare a picture frame, you can do this to a mirror with a frame.

Create a wreath. This is the same concept as using decorations to adorn a frame. Only this time, you’re sticking them together to create a circular form that you can hang on any door that needs cheering up. Form a piece of wire into a circle and use it as the base for your wreath so your creation keeps its looped shape as you keep adding ornaments.

Use a shadow box. A shadow box—an enclosed glass-frame case—would be the perfect way to group broken ornaments and put them on display. You can either toss in Christmas balls alone, or keep things varied by also popping in a few toys, figurines, and holiday ribbons. For best results, choose a color scheme to make your shadow box look simple but elegant. For additional appeal, you can also decorate the glass itself using poster paint or Yuletide decals.

Create a centerpiece. Is your coffee table looking a bit lonely? You can quickly put together a centerpiece by throwing old ornaments in a clear glass bowl or platter. You can even make the centerpiece more festive by laying some Christmas lights over and around the ornaments. Just make sure the table is close enough to an available outlet, and that there are no flammable materials in and around the bowl.

Lay it flat. Instead of hanging your Christmas wreath like you usually do, place it in the middle of the dining room table and place a candle in the hollow middle for a nice lighted centerpiece. If there are parts of the wreath that have lost their evergreen, you can hide these gaps by gluing in—you guessed it—ornaments.

Make Christmas topiaries. You know those shrubs you see outside hotels and mansions that are trimmed into geometrical or animal shapes? You can do the same with your broken ornaments. Just glue them together into any figure you want, like an inverted cone for a tiny Christmas tree, or a sphere stuck to a branch or stick (use a Styrofoam cone or ball to keep the ornaments together). Place the arrangement on an available vase or decorative pot, fill the container to keep it stable, add some ribbons and you’re good to go. The best part is, unlike a real topiary, your holiday version won’t need watering.

Dress up your old Christmas bulbs. Do you have a string of extra-large Christmas bulbs that won’t light anymore? Collect the bulbs before tossing the string into the trash. Brush each bulb with glue and roll them one by one in some glitter until each one is completely covered. You can also use poster paint to give them each a bright-hued refresher. There’ll be enough cheer to go around with these newly decorated bulbs since a single string consists of multiple bulbs, so you can actually put them in separate containers and proceed with brightening up any surface of any room. You can also tie a string to each and turn them into Christmas tree ornaments.

A craft project that every member of the family can get involved in is the perfect way to bring your family together during the summer, or any other down time in your busy schedule, and insure that you are making lasting memories as well as fun crafts. Here are four ideas to get everyone involved, from your spouse to your youngest child.

  • Backyard Travel Sign

Make a sign that showcases in a fun way all of the places you have traveled to as a family. Get a large post and plant it in your backyard near a walkway. Then, gather planks of wood, preferably cut into a point by your family's fledgling carpenter (be that a caring father, and adventurous mother, or a supervised older child) and paint it in a fun, bold color. Then paint the name of the place you went (such as "Disney World" or "The Grand Canyon") as well as the number of miles between the destination and your home. Then, mount the sign onto the post with the point facing in the general east-west or north-south direction of the destination. Add new signs to the post as your family takes new trips until the post is covered in a rainbow of fun travel memories!

  • Mason Jar Planters

Have the kids pick out a few small plants such as pretty flowers or tasty herbs. Wash out a few mason jars and allow the kids to fill them halfway to three-quarters of the way full with dirt and plant the herbs or flowers in the dirt. Display your beautiful mason jar planters where they will get plenty of sunshine or use hot glue and twine to hang them on a porch or in a garden.

  • Bleach T-Shirts

Gather a few cheap T-shirts in a bright color (they can not be white or a light color or it will not work as well). Have the kids find bold silhouettes such as robots, animals, plants, or symbols and cut them out from magazines, newspapers, or print them from the internet. Place the silhouettes on sheets of cardboard and cut them out - this is now your stencil. Lay your T-shirts out with an uncut sheet of cardboard inside the shirt so that the bleach does not bleed through to the back of the shirt and then lay the cardboard cut-out on the front of the shirt. Have an adult spray bleach in a halo around the cut-out and let sit until desired shade is achieved. Quickly wash the shirts and hang to dry to reveal custom-made T-shirts for yourself and your kids!

  • Hula Hoop Rug

Get a hula hoop and several old T-shirts in bright colors. Cut strips from the T-shirts horizontally from the bottom of the T-shirts until just under the sleeves. Stretch these strips around the hula hoop to create a makeshift loom. Then, weave strips of the T-shirts around the hula hoop starting from the center and working outwards, tying the ends off on one side (this is the side that will face down when the rug is complete). When you are finished you will have a bright, crazy rug to adorn any room!

Be sure to always supervise children during the making of these crafts and to allocate the more difficult steps to yourself and your spouse, and you'll be having family fun in no time!

Everyone knows that a person’s hair is something that is noticed by everyone.  How many times have you heard the phrase “your hair is your crowning glory?”  It’s a very true statement indeed!  Regardless of how your face is looking, if your hair is in a mess then you won’t ever feel truly beautiful.  A big factor in the way you look overall is a nice glowing and shiny head of hair.

Because of this, beauty salons all over the world cater to women who want to come out looking beautiful with shiny and glowing hair.  Not only that, but stores all over the world now sell specialized products for your hair that can help you obtain that glowing and shiny look day after day.   There are a few tricks you can do yourself to ensure that your hair always has that glowing, shiny look.

Hair Trim – Cutting off the split ends and dead ends from your h air will help your hair shine and look much healthier.  Ridding your hair of the split ends will give the hair faster growth as well and prevent it from breaking.

Prenatal Vitamins – A trick of the trade?  Along with a healthy diet supplement your food with some prenatal vitamins.  These vitamins will do a world of good in making the hair shine and glow!

Shine Sprays – Shine sprays have been around for a while and give your hair a beautifully, glossy look at all times.  Make sure that you have the product sprayed into your tresses and refresh for added shine during the day or evening.

Nourish the Hair – You always have to be sure to nourish your hair from the root level up.  Oils for the hair work wonders as they soak into the roots and cuticles of the hair and seal them with nutrition.  This oil will also make your hair shiny and soft to touch.

Deep Oil Treatments
– Deep oil treatments performed on the hair will make you hair amazingly shiny.  Apply the heated oil directly to the scalp and then let it set in the hair for about 30 to 45 minutes and rinse completely.  This will put a deep conditioning in your hair and scalp and leave it extremely shiny as well as soft.  It also helps to prevent the hair from being damaged.  If you want to speed the process up after you apply the oil, wrap a very warm towel around your hair and the oil will soak in much faster.

An old time trick of the trade to make hair shiny is removing any build up on the hair.  To do that use a nice apple cider rinse you make yourself at home.  Dilute one tablespoon of cider with a liter of water and use it as a rinse before you shampoo the hair.  This will remove all the buildup and toxins that are in the hair and after shampooing you will notice a much more glowing shine!

Remember that to get a nice shiny and healthy glow on your hair, it all starts from the roots.  Use some of the methods listed above to help achieve much more shine and glow to your hair.

The following is a guest post by Daphne Francis, an article contributor from Group Health Insurance. Thanks, Love! :)

If you’ve got curves, put away your baggy black clothes, and listen up! There is such a thing as plus-sized fashion, and you too can be a dynamic fashionista. Just because you’re curvy doesn't mean you're sentenced to a lifetime of wearing unappealing and matronly clothes. With all the plus-sized fashion myths floating around, it’s hard to know what works and what doesn’t. It’s time to stop paying attention to the following fashion myths and give your wardrobe a makeover.

Curvy Girls Can Only Wear Black
Not True! Not only can we were bright colors, but prints aren’t off limits either. It’s all about how you wear the colors. When worn correctly, bright colors and prints can flatter your body just as well as black. Try to stick to about three colors per outfit. Use the colors to make you appear slimmer by positioning the bright color either on the sides or in the middle. This will give an illusion of slimness and contour, while allowing you to wear any color you want.

Skinny Jeans are for Skinny Girls
False! Curvy ladies everywhere are accentuating their bodies with a hot pair of skinny jeans. With more women designing fashion, the options are literally endless. Put away your mom jeans and get you a pair of skinny jeans or leggings. Pair them with kimono sleeves or a tunic top. Also, finishing them off with a heel will elongate your leg and leave you feeling and looking fabulous.

Big Girls Need to Cover Up
Not even close! Tank tops are not your enemy. Make sure your tank fits well and if you feel a bit self-conscious, add a cropped jacket. The layered look is in, so go crazy! Just don’t feel like your tank tops should never see the light of day.

The Baggier, the Better
Absolutely not! While self-conscious curvy girls may feel more comfortable wearing baggy clothes to cover up the curves, they actually make you look bigger. Rather than curvy, you end up just looking a bit like a balloon. Show off your beautiful curves; we weren’t made to be stick people. If you want to hide your belly, accentuate your other assets. A trapeze top is fitted at the top but fans out under the bust. This will hide your middle while showing off your upper body.

Dressing Up a Curvy Body is a Disaster
Are you kidding? Every woman can look fabulous in the right dress. A-line shapes, empire waists, and wrap styles were invented for curves. They will accentuate all the right places without drawing attention to all the wrong places. Give these options a try and find the right dress style for your body.

It’s important not to get stuck in your comfort zone. Wearing baggy t-shirts and jeans is okay for a lazy Saturday at home, but it’s absolutely possible for curvy women to look fantastic in fashionable clothes. Take a friend shopping with you, and try on some different styles. While you might feel uncomfortable at first, trust your friend to tell you the truth. You just might create a whole new you!
