5 Tips To Preserving Food

Preserving food the right way can save you lots of money. That’s because it's costly having to throw food away every so often, then head out just to shop for more. Besides, it’s morally wrong to throw away food; in a world where there are people literally dying of hunger. To help you keep your food fresh for longer, here are 5 tips to preserving food.

1. Boil it before storage
When you boil food, you kill microorganisms that are usually responsible for causing your food to go bad.  To ensure that the boiled foods last, ensure that you store them in airtight jars. This kills germs and can keep your food fresh for a lot longer. Even fruits can be preserved by boiling, provided you first put them in a can. For best results, make sure you boil your food at over 140 degrees. That’s the temperature at which, most microorganisms die.

2. Use strong concentrates
Both sugar and acidic concentrates can be a great way for preserving food since they have the ability to destroy microorganism.  For instance, if you are looking to preserve vegetables, you can use a strong acidic solution such as Vinegar or salt. Other foods can be stored in a strong sugar solution, or in alcohol. Preserving foods using strong concentrates is cost-effective since most of these solutions are readily available in the home environment. There is absolutely no reason why your food should go bad, yet you have salt, sugar, and vinegar in your kitchen.

3. Squeeze out air from your food
Most of the microbes spoiling your food are aerobic. This explains why you can keep food in a fridge, only for it to go bad after a few days. To ensure that your food lasts longer, squeeze it to push out air, and kill microorganisms. One of the best ways to remove air from your food is by using a vacuum sealer. A vacuum sealer squeezes the out air in your food, giving it a longer lifespan. However, before you buy one, you need to do a thorough research on the best vacuum sealer in the market. The last thing you want is to spend money on a product that cannot effectively do what you bought it to do.

4. Squeeze out moisture from your food
Like air, moist environments are perfect breeding grounds for microorganisms. That’s why you need to dry out your food before storing it. You can do this by warming it over an oven, or dipping it in salt or other strong concentrates that drain water through osmosis.

5. Freeze it
If you want to preserve food in your fridge for longer, then put it in the freezer compartment of the fridge.  These extremely low temperatures will kill all microorganisms, and keep your food fresh for longer. Some foods such as meat can last for long when frozen. All you have to do is warm it, to remove the ice when you want to cook it.
