All About Wigs and Hair Extensions
Wigs has evolved over the years, it has become an industry that now caters not only for those who have hair issues but also to those who wants to use it as an everyday accessory. Wigs are a great way to get creative and be unique without damaging your hair. Let me give you a basic guide to everything you need to know about wigs and extensions.
Here are the different types of extension applications:
1. Tape-In Hair Extensions
Tape hair extensions are pre-taped and then taped/glued together on either side of your own hair. Usually, you would need a hairdresser to apply tape-ins for you because it needs to be aligned with the roots and they are applied to a tool that heats up the glue.
2. Sew-In Hair Extensions/Weaves
Weave hair is applied by braiding the natural hair into a cornrow first, and then the extensions are attached using a needle and thread and threaded into the braid/cornrow. It is used for people with thicker hair because of the way they are applied. The weave application is a very long process, can make you feel very heavy and uncomfortable. This method is also applied by a hairdresser as it is a very difficult application that needs to be sewn-in by a professional.
A lot of hair weave websites sells different type of weaves that you can choose from:
- Peruvian Weave
- Indian Weave
- Malaysian Weave
- Eurasian Weave
- Brazilian Weave

3. Fusion & Pre-Bonded Hair Extensions
Fusion hair extensions are bonded to natural hair using different adhesives such as glue. Applying pre-bonded hair extensions take approximately 3-4 hours to apply and are also applied by a hairdresser.
4. Micro-Link Hair Extensions
Micro link hair extensions are also known as microbead or micro- loop hair extensions. These hair extensions are applied by looping the extensions through the natural hair. You then clamp it down with a special tool/clamp, heat, and a metal bead (or ring).
5. Wigs & Hair Pieces
Wigs and hairpieces come in different types and hairstyles. From short to long, straight or curled, human hair or synthetic. There's a lot to choose from. Easy to use and not damaging to hair because you can just put it on top of your hair.
6. Clip-in Hair Extensions
Clip-in hair extensions, come in a strand of contoured pieces, some long, and some can be cut shorter, with clips that are sewn into the strand. The clips are sewn-into the hair before receiving them, making it ready to use, and easy to simply “clip” the pieces to your natural hair, all on your own! Easy to use and less damaging, that is why it is one of most popular hair extension methods.
