When you think of the education sector, it’s likely that you think of teaching, but this is not the only career you can pursue. While teaching is the most common route into the education sector, as there are many different roles that need competent staff to fulfill them such as counselors, management staff and other complementary staff like dinner staff and cleaning and maintenance staff.

Though the education sector may not have occurred to you before, if you are looking for a career change and want to make a real difference to young lives, this is the perfect option for you.

What Are the Qualifications I Require?

As you might imagine, if you want to get into the education sector, you will need to be well-qualified yourself. Teachers need to get a bachelor’s degree through some preschool teachers may be able to start working with an associate degree while they work towards their bachelor’s. The older the students you plan to teach, the more highly qualified you will need to be as you will need to be able to teach the curriculum well.

Counseling is another side of education and is an important role as the pressures of exams combined with growing up do affect many students. To do this role you will need to gain a degree in psychology first and then go on to do a Masters of Science in Education School Counseling. There are lots of good schools offering this course and St. Bonaventure University even offers an online course.

If you would like to teach as a business venture - say you want to offer cookery classes or art classes - you won’t necessarily need a qualification but it will set you apart to your target audience. In this case, it is more important that you can show your skill and teach well so after your first classes ask your students for testimonials to go to your website. This kind of teaching is very different as you won’t be teaching a course or aiming to pass an exam but do want your students to learn and have lots of fun. If you aren’t sure whether teaching is for you, this is a good place to start as it offers all the highlights but comes with a little less pressure on results.

What Are the Qualities I Need?

If you plan to go into the education sector you will certainly need to be patient. Education is, obviously, about learning but it is not just focused on the exams at the end. You will need to be able to listen to concerns in any role and solve problems to smooth the educational journey of the students. In this job, patience is key as you can’t rush learning.

You will also need to be willing to work with a wide range of different people. As it takes so many people to make this industry work, you will certainly meet people from all kinds of backgrounds with lots of different talents. While there is naturally some competition in the industry, by and large, the aim here is quite simple: make a difference and do you best. Determination will be your middle name.
