Rants and Raves of a Bum

It's no secret that having a new baby means you don't get much sleep. Little ones don't start sleeping through the night for several months and you may find that your baby is waking up multiple times each night, even when she's not hungry. Fortunately, you aren't doomed to sleepwalking through both night and day because there are several simple things you can do to help your baby sleep better so that you can too.

Try Swaddling
Your baby is used to being in a small, warm, tight space since he was in the womb for so long. By emulating that feeling for him, you can help him sleep better and at longer stretches. Swaddling also helps minimize the startle reflex that babies are both with and that lasts for about five months. There is a variety of swaddling blankets on the market, but the idea is to tightly wrap your baby so his arms and legs remain in place close to his body. You can do this with traditional receiving blankets or with a swaddling product. Either way, it helps him sleep better and is one of the top recommended sleep aids out there. You can find advice about choosing a great crib and mattress for your baby at whooopsadaisy.com.

Do the Last Night Feed
Sometimes called dream feeding, this involves giving your baby a feeding right before you go to bed. This fills her tummy and gives you the potential for several hours of sleep before she wakes up hungry again. This is a great way to ensure better sleep for you and your baby in the first few months after you bring her home and it works for both bottle feeding and breastfeeding.

Use a White Noise Machine
When your baby can hear what's going on in the rest of the house or a loud sound startles her awake, it can be hard to get her to stay asleep. A white noise machine or fan is great for providing a soothing background sound that masks dogs barking, people talking, the television and the ringing of your cell phone. By covering up those noises, your baby should be able to sleep better.

Have a Routine
Babies and children thrive on routine and once your little one gets a little older, you can implement a routine that will help his body know it's time to sleep. This could be a warm bath and a snuggle, or it could be a snack and a song you gently sing. Whatever it is, use the same routine in the same order and it won't take long before it signals to your baby that it's time to get some sleep.

Teach Your Baby to Sleep Independently
It can be very tempting to rock your baby to sleep or snuggle her until she drifts off, but your goal is to teach her to fall asleep on her own. For that reason, try putting her down in her crib when she starts to get drowsy instead of after she's already fallen asleep. This lets her fall asleep without you and sets the stage for healthy sleep going forward. If she relies on you to fall asleep, it's going to be very difficult to break her of the habit as she gets older. This also helps her get herself back to sleep if she wakes up at night and isn't hungry or needing a diaper change.

Baby sleep is elusive, and it will take some effort to get into the swing of things. But once you do, you and your baby will be so much healthier, happier and better-rested.

It's the first time you baby is experiencing what Christmas is like. It's going to be the first time they’re introduced to this culturally important event. Some parents might say that they won’t remember it thus there’s no point in doing anything special. This kind of attitude will not help your child as they grow because even though a baby’s mind is in the very early stages of development they can still sense what is going on. So when a family gets together and the home looks different at a specific time of year, this will be logged into their brain and the event will be something they notice more and more as they grow up. It's also just a good time for you and the family to make some memories that one day you can look back on and say you put in the effort and had fun. So since you do have a little one with you, what should their first ever Christmas be like?

Tickle the senses

Baby’s a very visual and touch sensitive. What they hear and smell isn’t as important as what they can feel and see. This is because their mind is in the survival mode all the time because they are small and vulnerable. However, you can introduce them to new smells to engage their mind and help them to experience new things. Try to make some Christmas drinks that are non-alcoholic such as a mix of cranberries, oranges and small cinnamon sticks. You can also add one kind of berry in there such as raspberries or strawberries. You may want to put in a little herb as well such as a sprig of rosemary. Allow this to boil and then just sit in the living room out of the way. This helps the home to smell like Christmas and introduces your baby to new complex smells of fruits, herbs and a little spice.

Dressed in red

No doubt that many parents will dress their children in a neutral color because it's versatile. A white or cream tone is very common among baby clothes as this can show you any signs of vomits, and of course if your baby has gone to the toilet. However, for Christmas, you can dress your baby in red, in clothes that pertain to the time of year and the event being celebrated. After reading through this ibotta app review you can see how shopping on Amazon for baby clothes in this fashion could give you a 5% cash back coupon. This is for the bulk of the shopping so you can buy things like reindeer outfits, fluffy snowman shoes, and socks as well as other St. Nick outfits too. Your baby will see that they are dressed in a bright color that isn’t something they normally wear and will give their brain something to comprehend.

Give your baby’s nose something to be intrigued about and note that this is something they are not familiar with by making a Christmas potpourri. Leave it in the living room and whenever they’re with you they will be smelling what Christmas is like.

Mothers are not an exception when it comes to giving gifts at a baby shower. Take note of the current season and buy outfits that suit the season. Baby shower gifts are now trending and remember infants need their own items because their immune system is usually lower than that of adults. Therefore before buying a gift consider the impact on the baby.

Top 5 Baby Shower Gifts in 2018

1. Maternity Pads

Remember to gift her with maternity pads that are super comfortable. Hospitals provide them but you can get her a brand that is more comfortable. Postpartum bleeding can be very heavy more than the more menstruation periods. What some hospitals provide may not be enough, therefore, it is important she has some just in case they are not enough.

2. Newborn Outfit

This is the most common gift ever bought. It is advisable to buy enough or just a few baby outfits. This is because you will find others have bought and mothers buy them too even before delivery. Some new mothers have claimed that they appreciate the outfits clothes bought but newborns outgrow them even before they wear all of them.

Avoid buying clothes that have hoods or collar necks which will make the baby keep on searching for tits to breastfeed on. Socks at this moment are not important because they will only keep falling off.

3. Receiving Blankets

They are important for the new born baby to keep warm. The blankets not only come with some warm but also with some joy to the mother. They are also long term because the baby can use it even in the future years. When buying, consider the material of the blanket and ensure it is gentle on the baby and also warm.

Children’s skins are usually very sensitive. Cotton is the best and the baby can also breathe through it. Babies can tangle their necks on blankets with ribbons; loose tassels thus, keep in mind the safety of the baby.

4. Grooming Set

The set has items specifically designed for the baby. Some of the items you can find in the kit depending on a brand include; thermometer, toothbrush, nail cutter/trimmer, nasal aspirator, teether, massage gummer, hair comb, emergency kit and many more.

Proper tools should be used by the mother need to care for her young one. Another good thing is that it comes with storage bags that can be used to keep the baby’s items especially if the mother is always on the go.

5. Gift Card

Have you been invited to a baby shower and you have no idea of what to get the mother? A gift card for both the mother can save the day for you. Some people get invited when they do not have enough money to get a gift at the baby shower.

Therefore, it is a personal choice to combine the card with something else such as food. The food can be composed of only fruits, nicely packed in a small basket and the card on it to accessorize it more.

Having a baby is a huge responsibility and it can be the biggest job you take on in your whole life. As we grow into our twenties, the countdown seems to begin on when we should have a child and this can lead to us feeling pressured into having a little bundle of joy of our own.

You probably can’t move on Facebook for pregnancy announcements, and it can be a world away from the days when surgical abortion was a huge option for your friends if they couldn’t look after a child of their own quite yet. But the real question we have to ask ourselves is this: when are we ready to have a child? How can we know that we are in a place in our lives where a child will complete us? Well, there are a few signs that you are ready to have a baby of your own this year...

1. You enjoy being at home

One of the things which young people struggle with when thinking about children is the idea of having to give up the nights out and drinking for nights in front of the TV with a baby in your lap. However, you might have already grown out of going out drinking and you may already spend most of your weekend evenings sitting in front of the TV with your partner and a glass of wine. So really, what stopping you from adding another body into the room?

2. You have handled temper tantrums

If you have a baby in the family or your friend has a child, one of the things you need to think about is dealing with tantrums. Have you ever actually successful dealt with a temper tantrum from a child? They can be incredibly hard to deal with and you will be able to tell that you are ready for parenthood or not by the way that you deal with it. If you run for the hills at the first scream then you might still have some time to go, however, if you relaxing by having your own tantrum to distract them you need to really consider having a baby of your own.

3. You enjoy quiet evenings

If you don’t mind being in the house at the weekend enjoying a glass of wine while you have a face mask, then you might be the perfect candidate for a baby. For those of you who need to be out with friends every weekend, it might be a huge adjustment to have a baby and this might not be the ideal time for you to have a little bundle of joy of your own.

4. People have already seen your boobs

The funny thing is, that as you grow older you will have likely shown your boobs to many different people in your friendship group. Whether it is asking if they are lopsided, eating help putting on your bra or anything else, there will come a time when pretty much all of your friends have seen your boobs. At this point, you no longer need to worry about having to breastfeed in front of your friends and this can make you ready for the challenge of a child.

5. You are happy to share

There are many people in this world who won’t offer up the lady cookie, and you will likely have been one of them for a long period of your life. However, if you reach a stage where you share everything with your partner and your friends, this is a great sign that you are ready to be a parent. When you have a child you are very unlikely to ever be able to eat anything for yourself anymore!

6. Bodily fluid doesn’t freak you out

No one wants to be wiping up sick and worrying about fluid from all ends, however, it is a sad fact that you will have to deal with lots of different fluids when you have a child. If you are perfectly okay with cleaning up sick and other fluids, and you have already done this with a pet, then you are likely going to be just fine having a child of your own.

7. You always notice babies

There will come a certain time in your life where people disappear and all you will be able to see is babies. Babies are incredibly cute, and you will likely start to notice every single baby in the vicinity. If you can’t seem to go anywhere without seeing babies, you might be in the right place mentally to have a lovely baby of your own.

8. You aren’t stressed

The most important thing you need to think about when having a baby is the lack of sleep you will suffer with for the first few months of being a parent. If you are going to be subjecting yourself to sleepless nights and stress, you need to make sure that you are ok being up at different times of the night and you can also think about low-stress levels. If you are in a low stress place in your life right now and you are tired, you are in a good place to have a baby.

9. You pick at leftovers

A lot of the time children are fussy eaters, and you will notice that your child will likely leave things like crusts on their plate at the end of a meal. If you are already the kind of person who picks at your partner's crusts when they have eaten, you can be the perfect candidate for a parent because a lot of the good you eat will be crusts anyway.

10. You have a machine washable everything

When you have a child, no fabric in your Home will be safe. It is crucial that you have machine-washable clothes and also that you have wooden floors or a great carpet cleaner. There will likely be mud, sick and lots of other stuff all over the house when you have a baby so make sure you are ready to clean it all up!

11. You can function on less sleep

Sleep is a commodity which a lot of us don’t get enough of, and if you want to have a baby you will likely not be getting much sleep for a long time. If you are the sort of person who can stay up until midnight and be up at 6 am for work the next day, you are likely a great candidate to be a parent because this is as much sleep as you are likely to get.

12. No white walls

If you have a modern home you will likely have thought about painting the walls white and keeping your design looking fresh and minimal. However, white and babies don’t mix, so unless you want your walls to end up covered in colours and scuffs, you are much better off painting your home a bold colour or a warm one. You can also forget those dainty white cushions because they won’t stay that way for long!

13. You enjoy watching baby programs

Whether it’s sitting in bed when you are sick and watching the Teletubbies or catching the latest cartoon films when they come on at Christmas, you will likely be the perfect candidate for a parent if you are the sort of person who genuinely loved watching kids TV. It will be likely the only thing you hear and see on the TV during the day so you had better get used to liking it!

14. You spot silly parenting mistakes

The true sign that you are ready to have a child of your own is the fact that you are able to look at other people with their babies and you can see the mistakes that they are making with ha doing them or interacting with them. If you think you could do better and you can spot what a baby wants, you are sure to be an amazing parent when you do finally get pregnant.

15. You want to be pregnant

This one is the obvious one, but it is also one which will really show you how much you want a child. If you are a few days late with your period and you immediately go out to get yourself some pregnancy tests, you likely are ready for parenthood. You might take the test and sit hoping for a positive result, and if you do, you will know that now is the right time for you to get pregnant and have a child.

A child is a big job but it can also be the best thing that ever happens in your life. Having a baby is amazing and they will be the most amazing little bundle of joy. Sure, it will be hard, but when you know that you want this and you are happy to put in the work it can be the greatest gift of all.

It’s summer, and for many of us, that means it’s also vacation season. There’s nothing like a good vacay to blow the cobwebs away and de-stress from the day to day grind. However, when you have a baby in tow, that wonderful vacation you’ve been dreaming of can become more of a nightmare, UNLESS you take steps to travel smart.

Here are some tips for traveling with a baby that will make this summer’s vacay go without a hitch for you and your family:

Proper Packing

When you’re traveling with a baby on board, traveling light goes out of the window. If you want to keep baby, safe, calm and happy, not only are you going to need a good car seat, but you’ll need to bring along bottles and formula  or milk, which means bringing along a cool box too, fun toys to keep them entertained, spare clothes, a portable ‘changing station’ and diaper pail to avoid the unnecessary mess of dirty diapers while traveling. The reviews of the best diaper pails can help you in buying the right one. You should be able to find much of what you need at Bubbalove online baby shop, and you should remember not to pack this stuff with your main luggage, or you’ll have a nightmare trying to find it when it’s needed.

Unpack as Soon as You Get There

The second you reach your vacation destination, you should start unpacking, at least the stuff you need for your baby. Leave the baby in the crib or playpen (you should bring a playpen if there won’t be one at your hotel) and set about unpacking changing mats, clothes, toys and toiletries, so that you all feel settled in and you know where everything is so you can stay organized throughout your trip.

Set Up a Changing Station

Find a corner of your hotel room/suite/bathroom and set it up as a changing station with diapers, wipes, and a changing pad and diaper bags, so you’re prepared when baby’s first pop of the vacation happens, and you don’t have to run around trying to find a diaper, clearing a space to change him.

Set Up a Play Area

It’s also a good idea to set up a playpen and fill it with toys, a sleeping pad, blankets, and books so that you have a safe place for baby to play while you get ready for dinner or have a rest after all that sightseeing.

Plan Long walks

A lot of babies find it hard to sleep in unfamiliar places so it might be worth looking at a map of your destination and plotting out a few long walks, which you can take at times when you want the baby to sleep. She’s much more likely to do so out in her stroller in the fresh air, after all.

Book a Connecting Suite or Apartment

If you have a fussy baby or you’re worried your baby will find it hard to sleep on vacation, consider booking a connecting room, apartment or suite where you can have separate rooms, that way you won’t disturb your child and they’ll find it easier to get off to sleep.

Don’t Break Routine

I know when you’re on vacation, you might want to switch things up a little, but if you don’t want to be dealing with a cranky baby, you really should stick as closely as possible to your normal routine for sleeping/waking and eating as possible.
