Rants and Raves of a Bum

Whether you’re trying to prepare your home for market or simply searching for great ways to make it look more appealing, there are many things you can do that won’t cost you a fortune. From cleaning specific areas of your home’s exterior to making repairs, increasing your home’s curb appeal doesn’t have to be complicated at all. Here are 5 easy ways to step up the appearance of your home, many of which you can start on right away!

1. Exterior Clean-Up

If you haven’t power washed your home in awhile (or ever), this can greatly brighten up the paint. You’ll need to work with cleaners like bleach and trisodium phosphate (TSP) if there is mildew present. If you’re uncomfortable doing this, there are likely an assortment of local businesses in your area that will take care of this for you. When is the last time you cleaned out your gutters? Clogged with mud, leaves, and other debris, your gutters can seriously detract from your home’s appearance if they aren’t clean. Plus, during a rainstorm, the dirty water spills out onto your home’s siding and windows. If you wash your home yourself, this is very cost-effective, especially if you already own a power washer.

2. Lawn Maintenance

How is your yard looking? If the grass is looking a little brown or you have a few unkept flowerbeds, this can detract from your home’s curb appeal. Yard care is crucial to the way your home looks, so try to devote time over a weekend to trim shrubs, reseed areas of your yard, and weed the sidewalk if you have one. Manicuring your yard certainly takes time, which may be something you don’t have much of during the week or on the weekends. In this case, you may find that a lawn care company is a better fit for you. They’ll be able to quickly take care of things like disorderly shrubs and get your yard looking nice and tidy.

3. Install or Replace Window Screens

If your windows don’t already have window screens, this would be an excellent investment. Window screens offer a plethora of benefits including daytime privacy, insect protection, heat reduction, and more. Best of all, they will allow you to open windows throughout your home without fear of young children or pets falling through the open space. You may already have window screens, but some of them are torn, brittle, or faded from the sun. Window screen replacement is easy, especially if you built your first screens. After selecting the right screen material for your needs, you can either purchase them unassembled or pre-built. These will give your home a finished look that looks great from the street!

4. Spruce Up the Front Door

There are few different ways you can go about making your front door look more attractive. If your door number could look better, replace it with another that is easy to see from the road and matching the appearance of your home. You can also swap out old door hardware for new handles and locks for a more modern, sophisticated look that catches the eye. During the holidays, make your front door festive by adding a wreath. If you have a knack for creative DIY projects, you can also craft wreaths to suit any time of the year, from the summer to the fall.

5. New Paint

One of the best ways to totally rejuvenate the exterior of your home is with a fresh coat of paint. Maybe the colors of it now are simply too faded or not as attractive as they once were 15 years ago. Eventually, every home will need new paint to keep it looking great. While you can surely paint your home if you have the skills, it may be best to hire professional painters who will ensure the right type of paint is selected and that it’s evenly applied on all sides of your home.

These are just a few of the many ways in which you can up the curb appeal of your home. With just a little planning, you can tackle a few or all of these projects over the course of a few months or even faster. You’ll be able to immediately complete projects like washing straight away, while others like repainting will take longer. Don’t be surprised when family and friends note the great changes you’ve made! Even if you aren’t preparing for a move, elevating the curb appeal of your home will grow your sense of pride for where you and your family live. There’s nothing better than feeling satisfied with the way your home looks!

Greenery never ceases to take one's breath away and is always a serene sight to gaze at. No interior landscape is complete without the finishing touch of elegance. And if you are looking for the definition of elegance, Artificial Lisa Cane is the perfect product to add to any interior landscape. It not only adds to the exquisite and intricate detail of an interior landscaping design, but it is also a space-worthy addendum to big interior spaces such as office reception halls, theme parks, malls and restaurants. This artificial landscaping product does not occupy very much space and attracts attention while being a serene part of a whole green landscape as well.

The Sub-tropical Evergreen

The Lisa Cane is a standout amongst the most dazzling plants one has ever used for decoration. The plant gets its style from the long, dark shaded green leaves which can be matched up with any light hued artificial blooms. This beautiful plant is accessible in diverse varieties and distinctive shapes as well. Additionally, you can have any lightly-hued wall panels on your inside become the attention-seeking part of the décor with the faux cane nestled against it.

The Artificial Lisa Cane, very easily available, looks as good as the real one. The advantage being, that it’s lighter and also available in smaller and bigger sizes. As it does not require much space, it can either be a part of your interior plant design like landscape greenery of malls, restaurants or hospitals or else it can be part of your artificial outdoor landscaping.

Inexpensive, Safe and Elegant

Artificial Canes have many advantages over its real counterpart, here are a few:

  • The leaves are made from best quality silk that is created to withstand very high temperatures and keep off dust.
  • They are portable as they are lighter in weight in comparison to the original plant. Therefore, they can be shifted and put accordingly without much manpower thus not staying fixated at one place. Also can be used in low light spaces where real plants won't grow.
  • This faux plant does not attract pests and pets and has no requirement of water or sunlight. So maintenance is nil.
  • The realistic replications and the stylized crafting of the leaves make the faux plant grab eyeballs, always.

Moreover, the silk leaves utilized are totally secured against UV radiation and the brilliant green shades don't fade because of over-exposure to the elements. This attribute makes the Lisa Cane perfect for being used in passageways and unenclosed spaces such as front porches.

The Artificial Lisa Cane is an easily available and portable plant that adds color and style to your green landscape. Starting from office interiors to that of malls, the faux plant is versatile as it fits any space and truly forms a perfect communion with your idea of a green interior landscape.

Does your house look like the inside of a clean room rather than a home, full to the brim with blank, dull walls everywhere you go? If so, then it’s time to spice things up a bit. After reading this post, you’ll no longer be stuck for inspiration on how to liven up your walls and create a home environment you can be proud of. Here are some of the best ways to make dull walls interesting again.

Go French

Even though French styling has been around for more than 200 years, there’s still something so “ooh la la” about it that people love. French furniture, French fittings, French lighting: it’s all so darn romantic, isn’t it?

Do you want to spice up a blank wall French style? Try pairing a traditional French chaise with elegant sconces on the walls above. The combination of the settee and the sconces can brighten up even the dingiest, cupboard-like alcove in your home. French is particularly good in hallways, so go to town - or as the French would say, “au Centreville.”

Whack Out The Vintage Plates

Does your grandmother try to fob off old plates every time you go and visit her? Do you wish there was some way you could extricate yourself from the obligation to accept them? Well, now you might not have to. It turns out that vintage plates are all the rage right now. What’s more, they’re the perfect antidote to a boring, dull wall. An eclectic display of plates hung on the wall can transform the feeling of an entire room, and is especially suited to baby’s bedrooms.

Put Up Vintage Signs

Is your home a little “edgy?” Well, if it is, then you might want to put up some vintage signs - like the sort of signs you might see advertising a diner in the American Midwest. In fact, these signs can be the perfect complement to a bright kitchen, opening up space and completing the atmosphere in a way that no picture frame ever could. Try pairing vintage signage with animal or automotive decals for that ultimate kitchen diner feel.

Find A Hidden Gem In The Charity Store

One of the great things about charity stores is that you never quite know what’s going to turn up. It seems that every week there’s some new and exciting item in the local Oxfam shop just waiting for the right home to receive it.

If you’re going to use charity store pictures and paintings, make sure that you stick with a theme. Pairing landscape paintings by a classical artist to dog pictures by a modernist can clash. Take a look at the rest of the room in which the offending blank wall is situated and ask yourself what kind of prints would match. Flowers? Birds? Landscapes?

Invest In High-Quality Photography

There’s no need, of course, to stick with artwork per se. You could liven up your blank wall with some specialist photography too. But what to choose?  According to Samuel Burns Photography, landscape photography works really well in practically any room, no matter what the decor. However, the company also says that it takes time to capture the perfect photo. Often it requires chasing the light and returning to the same scene over and over again to make sure that the colors are perfect.

Add Mirrors

Mirrors are usually reserved for the bathroom. But mirrors, it turns out, can have a big effect in practically any room of the home, including the kitchen and living rooms. Got a boring wall you want to liven up? Get rid of it all together with mirrors and reflect all that light back into the room.

Experiment With Geometric Designs

If you’re the type of person who loves ultra-modern interiors, then you’ll probably also like geometric designs on the wall. Geometric designs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but most people go easy on themselves if they’re DIYing and stick with squares.

How do you DIY a geometric wall? Simple really. First, you’ll need to choose a base layer for the background color. Any color of paint that suits the rest of the room will suffice. The next is to grab some plywood from your local hardware store. Once you’ve got the wood back to your shed, start painting it in a color which complements that of the original wall. For instance, if you painted the wall blue, then choose something like white for the plywood.

Finally, attach the plywood to the wall using glue. (Glue is better than nails because it won’t ruin the look of the wooden pieces). And there you have it: a geometric wall design worthy of a place in the Louvre.

All Your Favorite Quotes

Are you the type of person who loves to post inspirational quotes on social media? Then you’re in luck. It just so happens that putting your favorite quotes on blank walls is becoming something of a trend at the moment.

You don’t want your wall writing to look like graffiti, of course, so make sure that it looks as artistic as possible. HGTV contributor Michelle Edgemont suggests using a combination of different bright colors and washi tape for a funky display.

Cork Boards

Whoever invented cork boards was a genius. They’re so versatile, and they’re the perfect solution to a dull, blank wall. Corkboards can be put anywhere in your home, but they work best in places where you’re really busy, like your home office or kitchen. Try putting up a cork board and pinning important articles or post-it notes to it. Don’t have much practical use for a corkboard? Not to worry: you can still put up your favorite pictures.

Photo Collage Of Epic Proportions

Most photo collages will fit inside an A2 frame. But if you want to rehabilitate a dull wall, you’re going to need something a lot bigger than that. The good news is that thanks to modern technology, it’s easier than ever to get your favorite photos blown up and blended together.

When it comes to interior decor, color can be difficult. It is so easy to get it wrong and end up with a home that, Despite your best efforts, looks worse than it did before you decided to add a splash.

If you’re planning to reinvigorate your home with a bit of color, here are some of the most common mistakes you could make, and some advice on how to avoid them:

Not Thinking About Light

Light and color work together. The right light can make a color look much more vibrant, and the wrong kind of light can make it look washed out and dingy. Luckily, this is an important issue to avoid! Before calling in CAMERON DAVIDSON PAINTERS AND DECORATORS, take the time to tape a sample of the color you are thinking of using up on the wall and be sure to take a look at it in all light condition, including artificial light. This will ensure you don’t end up with a color that looks great for part of the day and terrible the rest.

Using Too Many Colors

There is nothing wrong with using lots of different colors to decorate a room, but those colors need to be perfectly in balance if you want to avoid your home looking like a kindergarten. If your colorful room feels very ‘stressful’ to be in, chances are you are using too many different colors. You can restore the balance and make the room better by slowly eliminating colors until you have, perhaps no more than two main colors and a couple of accent colors. You could also try spreading the colors put more, rather than having them all together, so that they don’t feel too busy.

Too Much Matching

white-2591357_640.jpg

Conversely, having too many matching colors in the room can be just as bad, albeit in a different way. If you’re the kind of person who requires everything in your living room to be the two same shades of gray, that room is going to look pretty boring. Again, this is something you can easily remedy by throwing in a few accents. Visit BED BATH AND BEYOND and by cushions, vases, bedding, and candles in complementary colors to your home’s decor and spread them out across space, to infuse it with a bit more personality. Space will really come together then.

Not Being Consistent

Although you want to avoid your home matching too perfectly because it’s extremely boring, you also don’t want to decorate every room in the place so different that they have nothing in common at all. If one room is red, another blue, one green and the rest gray, your home is going to look like an explosion in a paint factory, and it is unlikely to be as calm and restful as you would like.

What you should actually do is use varying shades of the same color or colors that complement each other well to create a home that isn’t too samey, but which also looks like it is one cohesive space.

Color can be tough, but with these tricks, you should be able to use it very effectively in your home.

We all want our homes to be unique, don’t we? Having a custom home that stands apart from the rest is, in many ways, the dream. But, where should you look when trying to come up with original ideas? Many of us head online and take inspiration from others. But, that doesn’t work when trying to stand apart from the crowd. Instead, you’ll have nowhere from which to gain inspiration but yourself. And, that can make things tough!

The best way to move forward is often to take inspiration from your hobbies. These will give you a starting point, and ensure you create a home that reflects your personality. Of course, people like many different things, from television and film, to space. And, a home for a space lovers is what we’re going to focus on. Incorporating a space theme is a sure way to stand apart. Plus, there are some fantastic options to make it work. Here are a few worth considering.

OPEN IT UP

If space, stars, and astronomy mean a lot to you, you might want to consider opening your home to them as much as possible. Skylights are a fantastic option. Not only do they increase the amount of light you receive during the day, but they also allow you uninterrupted stargazing in the evenings. Nothing quite beats sitting in a dark room and looking up at the amazing sights above. You could take this even further, and install large patio doors which allow you to look out. You could even incorporate a conservatory space. All these steps are sure to make your home stand apart from the crowd. Plus, they’ll look amazing.

THE RIGHT MATERIALS

When working with any theme, it’s important to consider which materials to use. With a space theme, futuristic materials are your best bet. Metals are a good choice, as they’ll add a real spaceship vibe to your home. If you want inspiration, watch some classic shows, such as Star Trek. Take a look at the ships and think how the same materials could work in your home. Something like these aluminum shutters would work amazingly for this. If you want to go all the way, you could even get some metal floor tiles. And, don’t forget to consider your furniture, too. Looking back at those space-related shows, you often see plastic used in furniture. Stocking up plastic chairs, instead of soft sofas, may be the way forward.

ALL THE MOD CONS

As we’re thinking of your home as a spaceship, it seems only right to include some mod cons. Incorporating technology into your living space is the last step in this transformation. Incorporating surround sound speakers in your walls will look amazing. You could even use this as an excuse to invest in a wide-screen television. And, as you want this technology to become a major feature, it may be worth highlighting it in some way. Blue LED lighting underneath your television, for example, would be an excellent finishing touch.

Let’s focus on something a little unusual for once when it comes to talking about the home. It’s all well and good to discuss decor and design options, but sometimes, it’s important to turn your mind to practicality as well.

If you were to pick the most well-trodden route around your home, what would you say it would be? Perhaps it would be the living room to the kitchen, as you head to grab a snack while you wait for the next episode of your favorite binge watch show to begin? Or maybe it’s a less enjoyable path, such as the route from the laundry room to the bedroom to stash clothes - one of those chores few of us take much delight in.

Both of the above are good choices, but here’s an entry that might surprise you: the route from your front (or back - whichever you use as your main entrance point) to the car, and back again.

Think about it: we walk this route multiple times per day, often while juggling several items as we hastily try to ensure we have everything we need with us. It’s the route we’ll walk when we come home from the grocery store laden with bags and have to try and close car doors with our hips before walking. Given how much we use this area, isn’t it worth investing some time and thought into ensuring it’s as good as it can possibly be?

Idea #1 - Check The Surfaces

Source

If it’s been raining, then one of the worst feelings is the sense that you could slip over at any moment. That’s why it makes sense to ensure the flooring both outside of where you park and the first few steps into your home can handle wet footsteps. The best way to achieve this is with a more textured finish, which has the additional benefit of also helping to hide dirt.

Idea #2 - Think Coverings

On the same line as the above; think of the times of year when rushing to your car is a matter of battling the elements. It might be brushing aside rain and snow; or on the flip side, getting to your car of a morning and realizing the sun has been slowly baking it. Structures like carports are a perfect solution to this problem or, if that’s outside of your budget, even a few strategically placed stand umbrellas can make a difference.

Source

Idea #3 - Handrails & Hooks

Part of making this area easier to live with is about managing the route, which often involves - as mentioned - the transportation of objects either to or from the car. The best way of managing this is might be to install handrails and hooks at strategic points, meaning you can rest things for a moment without worrying about forgetting about them. Don’t think that these items can’t look stylish and deliberate either; cast iron is an all-weather metal that holds up to even the sternest of design scrutiny.

Source

While it might not be the more glamorous area of your home, as the above prove, it’s still worth putting some time into considering it.
