The Secrets To a Modern Home

If you haven’t redecorated your home for a while, then it could be time to give it the little update that it needs. While home decor trends don’t change too quickly, there are some things that can really date the look and feel of your home if you let them. It might be time to think about updating and modernizing the colors used in your home, as well as one or two of the pieces of furniture. The thing is that you don’t have to spend a lot to update and modernize your home, unless you really want to, of course. But a few small changes can really have a spectacular impact on the look and feel of your home.

So if this sounds like you and you haven’t done anything to your home for a while, then here are some tips and tricks and ideas to help you change the look of your home and make it more stylish and modern.

Change Flooring

There are some materials for flooring that can really date your home. They can make it look much duller and make it seem a bit cheap and retro. If you’re going for a retro vibe then it would work. But I doubt that most people are. So it is time to step away from the over-patterned carpets for starters. Yes, they can hide a multitude of stains. But they make most rooms look really drab, and can even make the room look smaller if they are very colorful or patterned. The same thing goes for floorings like laminate and melamine. They can make a home look cheaper and over time, they can get quite shiny looking, making them look tacky, rather than funky and modern. Instead, opt for more natural and organic materials like hardwood flooring for a more fresh and modern look.

Ditch the Unnecessary

With the Swedish mantra of ‘lagom’ all the rage at the moment, it is no surprise that decluttering is going to feature if you want to modernize your home. Lagom is all about having just enough, in all aspects of your life. And for a home, that means not having unnecessary things around the house. Whether that is by getting rid of unnecessary trinkets and ornaments or getting rid of unnecessary furniture. If you have not been able to face throwing something away before, then it could have found itself in a different room, rather than being thrown out. But if the hallway doesn’t need to have a sofa in, for instance, then you should move it out. Clear your home of the unnecessary things, and you might even make some extra cash if you sell them while you’re at it.

Make Your Home a Smart Home

Being able to make your home updated with tech, is a really good way to modernize your home. What you choose is up to you, but here are some ways that tech could upgrade your home:

  • Using a device like a Google Home or Amazon Echo can give your home a modern edge, and it doubles up as a timer, search engine, speaker, music player, and weatherman, to name just a few.
  • Make your garage more modern by making it a garage that just opens with the click of a button, like Gliderol garage doors, for instance. If you can just click a button when you’re approaching it, rather than having to get a lock and key, then it is a quick update that will also make your life simpler.
  • Invest in CCTV or a camera on your door. You can screen who is at your door, and make your home a safer place to be. It is a good way to deter thefts too, so can be an investment that is worth making.
  • Upgrading your home heating systems to use something like Nest is a good way to keep on track of your heating. It makes it much more efficient too, as well as easier to use. If you’re out and the heating is off, you can use your smartphone to switch it on so that the house is warm when you get back.

Use Glass and Mirrors

In a home that wants to look more modern, then it is a good idea to not underestimate the power that glass and mirrors can have in the home. To start off with, mirrors can make a home look larger than it is, as well as airy and light. Glass adds a new perspective, especially if new windows are added. In places like a bathroom, think about a glass shower screen, rather than a drab shower curtain, for example. In this instance, glass makes the room instantly more stylish and modern yet it is still functional.

Choose Sustainability

A modern home wouldn’t be complete without a few pieces of furniture or bits in the home that haven’t been reclaimed or recycled. Is there anything that you already have that you could turn into something else in the home? Is there anything that you could make a few changes to, like adding in some reclaimed beams to the ceiling of your home, or creating a chair out of some wooden beams. Choosing things that are more sustainable, rather than quick and cheap and fast furniture, is a good way to modernize your home and bring it up to date. It is the future!

Experiment with Color

When you think of a modern home it can often be mistaken for a minimalist home. But monochrome and practically empty isn’t the modern look that will work for everyone. So don’t be afraid to experiment with color. You could have neutral walls and then add feature art pieces that are bright and of a variety of colors. Rugs, cushions, and throws are other great ways to modernize the home.

Have you got any plans to update your home this year? Or what modern features do you already have in the home? It would be great to hear that you think and what you’ve got planned.
