Celebrating the holidays without alcohol especially if you are a recovering alcoholic requires a lot of discipline and resistance to temptation. After all, how can celebrations, gatherings, and parties possibly not include indulgence in alcohol, right? Well, contrary to popular opinion, it is possible to enjoy the holidays without alcohol. There are ways to help make your ordeal easier. Here are 5 ways to celebrate the holidays without alcohol!
1. A getaway, perhaps?
Everyone has a list of places they would like to visit and we are pretty sure that you are not an exception. Therefore, why not use this opportunity to travel? Traveling to new places can help break your monotonous routine and help you get your mind off of alcohol. It is not necessary for you to visit Rome exactly; you can just go on a camping trip or hike to somewhere nice. It doesn't matter how big of an adventure it is as long as it qualifies as an escapade.
2. Find a partner who doesn't drink
Having a partner who doesn't drink and who understands what you're going through can help you overcome the temptations. Befriending someone who doesn't drink will allow you to understand that it is possible to have fun without having a drink. You can do fun activities together and if you have a moment of weakness, your partner will be able to stop you from giving in.
3. Feast on a wonderful meal
The way to a person's heart is through his/her stomach. Therefore, if you can't drink on the holidays, you might as well indulge in a hearty/special meal. You will be able to treat yourself to a great meal from the money you will have saved up from going without alcohol. You need not necessarily go out to a fancy restaurant to have a great meal; you can enjoy a takeaway meal or just order in; whatever floats your boat. While feasting, just make sure it is a grand event.
4. Create a holiday tradition
Another good way to help you lay off alcohol during the festive season is for you to create new traditions. For instance, you can opt to visit the cinema halls or go to holiday events such as concerts, fireworks etc. You should be good as long as you engage in activities. And, it is not necessary for you to go outdoors. There is plenty that can be done inside too; for instance, you can play board games, bake cookies, and cake.
5. Walk away if you need to
If you are at a party surrounded by people merry making and enjoying their alcoholic beverages and if you feel uncomfortable about the setting, it is completely fine if you walk away from the celebration. You don't need to please someone at your expense. Therefore, it is imperative for you to put yourself first; we are certain that your friends and family will understand your decision to walk away. You can also visit halfway houses and sober living residences in Florida for help.
