Should You Consider Your Relationship When Potentially Relocating For Work?

Your career is a big part of your life, it’s the area of adult life that you dedicated your entire childhood too. If you hadn’t spent as much time learning while at school, you most probably wouldn’t be where you are now. The fact that you’ve put so much time and effort into forging a successful career for yourself means that when an opportunity comes knocking, it can be hard to turn it down.

The problem is that not all opportunities are as simple and straightforward as they seem. Sometimes, career opportunities come with an acceptance clause, such as that if you accept the role you will need to relocate for work, for instance. When it’s just you, this doesn’t seem like such a huge deal. After all, you can find a new home and make new friends wherever you go. However, when you’ve got a partner to think about, everything changes.

The question that a lot of people struggle with is whether they should take their partner into account when considering relocating for work. To help you determine what you should consider when it comes to making this kind of decision, below are some useful tips and pieces of advice.

Would your partner be moving with you?

If you’re married or you live together, then the answer to this is pretty straightforward. If you were going to move for your career, then yes your partner would most probably move with you. So it’s important to broach the subject with them to see what their response is and whether they would consider moving to somewhere new for your career. Of course, you’ll also have to consider their career, and whether they would be happy to also relocate and find a new job in your new hometown. Do you want to house hunt with them? Is your partner the one you want to sift through top local movers with? Do you want to spend time getting to know the new area with them? Are you in it for the long haul?

Are you just casual?

Is it just a casual thing? If you and your partner are purely casual or have only just got together and you’re not sure where you see things going or the arrangement has always been to keep it casual, then you may not necessarily want to factor them in when deciding whether to relocate for work. Obviously, this is something that the two of you would need to talk about properly, but if it’s only casual then you may not need to worry.

Is there a future for the two of you?

The main question that you need to ask yourself is a simple one: do you see a future together? It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been with someone, be it a few weeks or a few years, if you don’t see a future together, there’s no point taking them into account when deciding whether to relocate for work. Yes, breaking up may be hard and upsetting, but there’s no point staying together if there’s no future for the two of you. Whereas, if you can see a huge potential for success as a couple, then it’s vital that you take your partner into account when choosing whether to relocate for work or not.

When an opportunity arises that could help forward your career, naturally, you want to take it. Of course, it’s not just a case of thinking about your career though, often you have a whole range of other factors to consider, such as your relationship, for instance.
