Rants and Raves of a Bum

Age is one of the unavoidable elements of life but it doesn’t have to be a negative thing. As the years go by, we all become wiser. That certainly extends towards matters of health in terms of both the body and mind. You shouldn’t let either deteriorate; use the wiseness of your many years on this earth to make smart decisions and look after yourself. You might be old but you’re not past it, so here are some useful health tips as you reach those later years in life.

Looking after your senses.
Many things deteriorate with age, as that’s the simple effect of nature taking hold. Of course, the thing which most noticeably deteriorates (and this happens to people who are young as well as those who are old) is your sensory health. You’ve probably noticed that you can’t see or hear things as well as you used to. Still, whilst it may be a natural and unavoidable thing, that doesn’t mean you should shrug and accept your fate.

There’s a lot you can to reduce the damage to your eyes and ears. Regular trips to the opticians to check you’ve got the right eyewear prescription can ensure that you don’t wear insufficient glasses and end up straining to read or see things. You might also want to look into hearing aids so that you don’t counteract bad hearing by turning up the volume on things; this can do more damage to your ears.

Remaining physically healthy.
Another important thing to keep in check as you get older is your physical. You might have more aches and pains than you used to but that doesn’t mean you should neglect exercise and general physical activity. You might want to do some research into mobility aids for sale if you’ve been struggling to walk as well recently because it’s so important not to give up on keeping your body healthy. Bodily movement remains just as crucial to maintaining a good standard of health as it was when you were younger. You need to find as many ways to support that healthy lifestyle as possible, even if you can only manage a light jog or a brisk walk, at most. Take a stroll around your local park as a way of keeping your body active. Aim for a few thousand steps on a daily basis, at least. It will help to keep you mentally healthy too.

Being happy.

Healthiness really is a mental game. People with positive outlooks on life end up being physically healthy because, as mentioned in the introduction, your mind and body are interlinked. Stress and other worries really take their toll on your body as you age. That’s why it’s so important, above all else, to focus on being happy. Concerns about money, your family, and your health shouldn’t be burdens that you bear alone. Turn to the people you love to help you both practically and mentally. Life is about focusing on those important relationships and relishing in the little things.

There’s so much more to life than just helping yourself. There are so many people out there that need and rely on the help of others to get by in life. If you’re more settled in life, and feel you have much more to give, then open yourself up to helping others. There are a few different ways this can be done, and some require a little more time than others, but the satisfaction and reward you’ll receive will be so worth it. If you want to do more with your life, then read on to find out how you can help others.

Volunteering

Volunteering opens so many doors for you, as well as being so beneficial to other people. There are tonnes of ways to volunteer. You could be helping out at your local charity shop and be behind the sales that make the money for charity. You could invest your time in changing the lives of children through sport. Sport can be so therapeutic in helping children with disabilities. Or even just children with a troubled background, helping them find a passion for sport, and an escape from real life can be exactly what they need. You could even find opportunities abroad to help people suffering in different countries. There’s volunteering to be done in Thailand with teaching opportunities, or there are the towns of Bosnia that desperately need aid work completing. All of which are going to enrich your own life, as well as others.

Career Change

Volunteering is great, but why not make a career out of it. There are so many careers out there that are changing the lives of others. You’ve got the public sector that’ll see you saving lives on a daily basis such as nurses, right through to the interesting career path of a Psychiatrist. There are so many ways that people need help, and so many exciting careers to do this with. Have you ever considered becoming a life coach? People are desperately seeking guidance on how and where their life should be taking them, you could be the guiding life that shows them. Coach training at Animas Coaching will prepare you for this, it’s one of many easy career changes that will help change people's lives. The reward you’ll feel from having a career that helps people will be amazing.

Change Who You Are

So many people are oblivious to the people you’ll pass on the street that needs your help. Simple little gestures can change some people’s whole day. For example, the old lady struggling to carry her shopping on her own, give her a helping hand and make life a little easier for her. If you notice someone who’s noticeably upset in public, go and chat to them and see if you can be the listening ear they needed. If you pass a homeless person on the street, offer up your free change, or even offer to take them for a warm meal. Simple little gestures such as these are what gives people hope of good humanity in life.

Any parent knows that moving with young children brings a whole new set of challenges. As if you didn’t have enough to worry about, you also have to consider how the move will impact them. It’s important not to forget that, because of a choice you’ve made, everything’s changing for your kids. Despite the right reasons, that can be tough. As such, you need to consider properties your kids can get behind. It’s the only way to take the sting out of the move.

And, you may reach a stage where you start to question what role your kids should play in your home move. After all, your new house will be their home, too. It needs their seal of approval before you make any significant decisions. But, letting them be at the forefront of the search isn’t practical. Children have no concept of what makes a house viable, or how to act during a viewing. The good news is, there are ways to keep them involved without disrupting the hunt. Here are a few worth considering.

Consider their needs

First, you should think about your children’s needs, as well as your own. When you choose a neighborhood, it’s worth checking that there are other children for them to play with. Areas next to greenery and parks will also meet their needs. Plus, you want to look out for schools in the area to ensure your child doesn’t have a long commute each day. On a more fundamental level, you also need to consider their living arrangements. Is the new bedroom large enough to suit their needs? Is there space for them to play, or continue their hobbies?

Let them pick houses online

Obviously, you can’t leave the final decision down to a five-year-old. But, there’s no harm in letting them pick houses they like online. Companies like Nu Home Source Realty list their properties online, complete with pictures and descriptions. As long as the houses are in the right area, there’s no harm in agreeing to see one your youngster chooses. Even if you don’t like the property, it’s crucial your youngster feels their opinion matters. You never know, that house may even end up being the one. Though, make sure not to get your little one’s hopes up. Otherwise, the process will be more difficult. Make sure they know that a viewing isn’t a done deal.

Take them to second viewings

Understandably, few estate agents embrace the idea of showing a young family around a property. Not to mention that you’ll have enough on your hands without worrying about what the kids are doing. But, you do owe it to your children to let them see the house before you put an offer in. So, take them along to a second or third viewing. By this stage, you should already have considered the technicalities. So, you’ll be free to dedicate time to showing your children. With a bit of luck, they’ll like it as much as you do.

We all grow up being asked the same question: what do you want to be when you’re older? Some people know from the get-go, and others take half their lies to figure it out - and that’s okay. But the fact of the matter is that even if you know what you want to do, getting into that job isn’t an easy thing, and for some people, their dream job is in an industry that is nearly impossible to break into. Here are some of the hardest industries to get a job in, and some advice that will hopefully help you to get there.

Journalism

The journalistic world is almost at cut-throat as old Hollywood movies make it out to be. And for aspiring journalists, it can be a one in a million chance of getting that big break. You need to get as much experience as you can behind you in terms of writing. Use a blog to write article-like blogs and build up a readership.

Author

Getting published as a novelist is ridiculously hard - look at how often J K Rowling was rejected before someone said yes. Becoming a novelist is part luck and part perseverance, If you want to be a writer, don’t stop writing. As soon as you’ve sent off one manuscript, start on the next one. Try different avenues, including self-publishing, and enter into as many competitions as you can through sites like intercompetition.com.

Music

The music industry is more like a lottery these days, with shows like the X Factor dominating the pop charts. You get so many acts becoming one-hit wonders and disappearing into the background again. Explore your options as a musician, no gig is too small, and now radio show is too early in the morning.

Art

We’ve all seen the image of a struggling artist - and where most of the professions on this list fall under the ‘art industry’ umbrella, an artist has one of the trickiest jobs. You can spend a year creating a painting that no one else understands or even likes. As an artist, you need to keep going, try different mediums and take any opportunity you can.

Fashion

The fashion industry has been dominated by the same names for the past century - which is why it’s such a hard industry to break into. Haute Couture has stayed within the domain of certain families for decades, and have yet to let anyone new into their ranks. Street fashion, however, has a much more inclusive feel. In fashion, you might need to start by creating something other than couture clothing, and try and work up to it - if you can.

Acting

As we’ve seen in recent news, being an actor isn’t all glitz and glam. And further, then that it’s one of the hardest jobs to get and be successful at. You need to audition for everything, use sites like auditionsHQ.com to find some, and get an agent to help you progress your career.

When things go wrong in your house, it is important to know who to call in for help. We may be used to a society built around disposable goods, but you might be pleasantly surprised to finds tradespeople all around you who have a better idea of how to repair and revitalize your home without spending too much.

You might think that hiring someone in to fix things is a waste of money but think about the results you will be getting. A specialist tradesperson will be able to deliver high quality and long lasting results where you and an instructional video on the internet might stumble. Paying for craftsmanship and experience is always worth it. Especially when you consider how much more it could cost to rectify your mistakes.

From the electrician who can do everything from changing a light fitting to rewiring your entire house to the upholsterer who can take your sagging sofa and give it a new lease of life, here are the people who can help you to repair your way to perfection.

Electrician

Playing with electricity is a really bad idea. Before you can do any further damage, it is well worth calling in an electrician to have a look. They will be able to advise you on how best to proceed with any problem you might have. For example, if you have a lamp you love but the switch doesn’t work anymore, that could be a quick fix. Alternatively, if your electricity keeps shorting, you may need to replace the wiring in your home which is definitely a job for a professional!

Plumber

When plumbing goes wrong it can quickly get out of hand but fortunately, a great plumber will be able to repair the issues causing indoor rain without needing to replace too much. It is always well worth keeping a few spare tiles just in case of disaster but you can always use colour matched tile filler for a cheaper fix. While your home’s sewer line may be out of sight, it should never be out of mind. Damage to your sewer line could cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix. That’s why every homeowner should know the signs and symptoms of a broken sewer line. A good plumber will also be able to fix rogue dishwashers and washing machines as well as heating appliances too. In fact, wherever there is water, a plumber will be able to lend their expertise!

Joiner

When the cupboard doors are hanging off in the kitchen or the skirting boards are looking worse for wear, a joiner will really help you out. If you don’t have the patience for fixing a faulty hinge or regluing perfectly straight skirtings, it is well worth paying a joiner for their skills. A joiner will also be able to help with fixing furniture and replacing doors, floors and other structural components.

Upholsterer

When your old couch is looking a bit tatty, it’s probably time to give it a new lease of life. An upholsterer will be able to replace the fabric with any colour or pattern you choose (as long as it is fire safe) and refill those sagging seat pads with new foam. It might sound like a lot of work when you could just go and buy a new one, but this way you will get exactly the sofa you have always loved with the colour and comfort you so desire. There are so many great design ideas out there, why would you not make your dreams happen?

Small Repairs

It’s not just furniture and property that need repairing. Phones, laptops, small electricals and any number of other things will need a little extra care to extend their lifespans. These are all small projects that it shouldn’t take a professional too long to accomplish and will certainly be cheaper than replacing your technology full stop. Laptop repairs are certainly to be left with someone who knows exactly what they are doing and to avoid any disappointment make sure you back your files up regularly.

Decorator

Painting and decorating is a lot of fun and once you have chosen your paint or wallpaper, it’s going to make a huge difference to your space. If you are happy to take the time to do it and have the knack for hanging wallpaper then that’s amazing but for the rest of us, a decorator will do a much better job. There is nothing worse than seeing a pattern that doesn’t quite match or an uneven paint finish so avoid the frustration and get a decorator to sort it for you.

Landscape designer

Your garden is really another room in your house: you can eat here, cook, relax and enjoy your outside space. There are all sorts of free garden planning tools you could use to figure out a layout and design for your space but you will still have to do all the backbreaking work to get the results you hope for. A better alternative might be to hire a landscape designer who can help you to draw up the plans for your horticultural haven and then put it together for you.

Car Mechanic

When your car is making a strange noise, turning up the radio so you can’t hear it isn’t the same as fixing it. Cars are so integral to our lives that keeping them in top condition is vital for smooth running. A car mechanic will be able to fix all sorts of problems for you but there are a few things you will be able to do yourself. For example, there are some methods for removing dents you could try without risking your paintwork.

Home improvements might feel like an endless list of tasks that need to be done, but with some help from specialist tradespeople, that list will shrink quite rapidly. Having a characterful home is all about making sure that all the things you love are around you, looking at their best. Making sure all your appliances and technologies work is a must for a calm life! While the internet certainly has rafts of instructions for DIY projects, letting someone else do the work will let you get on with other things like enjoying your space and planning the next project.
